ENVIRONMENTAL PILLAR

KLEUSTER, in partnership with RENAULT TRUCKS, worked for one year with EVEA, a consulting firm specializing in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and eco-design, to carry out a comprehensive LCA of the KLEUSTER K350 vehicles.

This study required the collection of an extensive amount of data, including a detailed analysis of the composition of every component used in the manufacturing of the K350, down to the exact weight of the packaging for each individual part.

The assessment also takes into account the average use of the vehicle by KLEUSTER customers, enabling the measurement of the environmental impact of its operation throughout its entire life cycle.

This extensive work now allows KLEUSTER to accurately understand the environmental impact of the K350 vehicles, from manufacturing through to end-of-life.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) carried out by EVEA, an independent consulting firm and pioneer expert in eco-social design of products, services, and activities for over 20 years.

Critical review of the LCA carried out by CorpoKarma, a consulting firm and engineering office specializing in environmental transformation in support of a sustainable industry.

Kleuster certified CycleScore and France Vélo Index

CycleScore: the BOX 350 and PICK UP 350 stand out with an overall A rating, thanks to excellent performance on the social dimension (A) and a strong environmental assessment (B).

France Vélo Index:

  • the BOX 350 achieved a score of 4/5
  • the PICK UP 350 achieved a score of 5/5

SOCIAL PILLAR

Since 2022, KLEUSTER has been 100% owned by the JEAN LAIN Mobilités group. Accounting and HR services are managed directly by the JEAN LAIN group. As a result, KLEUSTER benefits from the same HR conditions as the entire JEAN LAIN Mobilités network.

In parallel, shortly after the acquisition by JEAN LAIN Mobilités, KLEUSTER and RENAULT TRUCKS established a partnership within the cargo bike business. KLEUSTER outsources the production of these vehicles to RENAULT TRUCKS through the Cargo Bike factory, which employs around ten RENAULT TRUCKS staff members and is located on the historic RENAULT TRUCKS site in Vénissieux.

This ecosystem is reflected in concrete actions:

On the production site:

  • The cargo bike factory within the Renault Trucks site is a benchmark in terms of ergonomics, standards, and 5S practices
  • All Renault Trucks standards have been applied to the cargo bike factory
  • Manual handling is limited to 8 kg for production operators
  • Working hours are arranged to grant each employee one non-working Friday per month, promoting work-life balance
  • The cargo bike factory is ISO 14001 certified

Within KLEUSTER offices:

  • A remote work policy of one day per week has been implemented for all employees
  • A 4.5-day work week is available to all employees
  • Employees are encouraged to use “soft mobility” modes to commute to work: tools for maintaining personal bicycles, secure storage facilities, safe cycling lanes around the site, as well as showers and changing rooms in the offices
  • Initiatives promoting equality and introducing young people to the industry are regularly carried out, such as hosting work experience students in their final year of middle school (third grade internship)
  • KLEUSTER vehicle trials have been organized for people with disabilities

ECONOMIC PILLAR

Since its creation in 2012, KLEUSTER’s mission has always been to provide reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective vehicles. KLEUSTER cargo bikes were designed to address the challenges of mobility in dense urban areas: certified as e-bikes, they can use cycle lanes and are, on average, faster than utility vehicles, which are often heavily slowed down by traffic congestion.

Cargo bikes are used for deliveries (parcels, food products, etc.) as well as for waste collection and green space maintenance. Craftspeople also widely adopt this mode of transport in large cities, as it allows them to avoid traffic and park more easily.

KLEUSTER therefore provides an innovative transport solution that supports the local economy in dense urban areas.

KLEUSTER vehicles are designed to be robust in order to reduce breakdowns and repairs, resulting in low maintenance costs. For its after-sales activities, KLEUSTER employs three staff members, as well as a network of partner repairers across France. The objective is to offer customers low operating and maintenance costs, supported by a responsive after-sales service to ensure minimal downtime.

Finally, KLEUSTER is committed to working with local suppliers whenever possible: depending on the models, between 30% and 50% of the components used in vehicle production are sourced from France.
